Your Journey

From Your Front Door to Tiger Harbour

The journey to Fuvahmulah is part of the adventure. Here's the step-by-step — from landing in the Maldives to your first dive briefing.

01

International Flight to Male

Fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) in Male, the Maldives capital. Direct flights operate from major hubs including Dubai, Singapore, Colombo, Istanbul, and most Asian capitals. MLE is the only international gateway.

02

Immigration & Baggage

Clear immigration (30-day free visa on arrival for most nationalities). Collect your baggage including dive gear. Exit the international arrivals hall.

03

Transfer to Domestic Terminal

The domestic terminal is a separate building adjacent to the international terminal. Walk or take the short shuttle. LSD arranges transit assistance for package guests arriving on international flights.

04

Domestic Flight to Fuvahmulah

Board your Maldivian Airlines flight to Fuvahmulah (FVM). Flight time is approximately 70 minutes over open ocean. Check in 2 hours before departure. Baggage allowance: 25kg checked + 5kg carry-on.

05

Dive Centre Check-in

Our team picks you up from Fuvahmulah airport and drives you straight to the LSD dive centre. You'll meet the team, get a welcome briefing, and an introduction to the centre. We fit your equipment, set up your gear, and get everything ready for the next day's diving.

06

Hotel Drop-off

Once your dive centre check-in is complete and gear is sorted, we drop you at your hotel to settle in. Your first dive day starts the next morning — briefing time and schedule will be confirmed at the centre.

Two Ways to Reach Fuvahmulah

Recommended

Fly from Male

Maldivian Airlines · FlyMe

~70 minutes flight time
2 daily flights (afternoon + late night)
25kg checked + 5kg carry-on
~$150-250 USD one-way

The standard route for all international visitors. Fly into Male (MLE), transfer to the domestic terminal, and board a direct flight to Fuvahmulah (FVM). LSD dive packages can include domestic flights.

Alternative

Ferry from Addu

RTL Speedboat · Feydhoo Port

45-90 min (sea conditions vary)
Daily except Friday
~$28 USD per person per way
Departs Feydhoo Port, Addu

Best if you're already in the southern atolls, arriving via Gan airport, or combining Addu diving with Fuvahmulah. The RTL speedboat is affordable but schedule is weather-dependent.

Male Airport Transit

Navigating Velana International

Step-by-step from international arrivals to your domestic gate.

Allow 2-3 Hours for Transit

Between your international arrival and domestic departure, you need time for immigration, baggage collection, terminal transfer, and domestic check-in. Don't book a tight connection — especially for late-night domestic flights. If in doubt, overnight in Male and fly the next day.

1

Clear immigration — present passport, return ticket, and hotel booking confirmation

2

Collect checked baggage from the carousel

3

Exit international arrivals and walk to the domestic terminal (adjacent building)

4

Check in at the Maldivian Airlines domestic counter — 2 hours before departure

5

Proceed through domestic security and wait at the gate

LSD package guests: we arrange transit assistance at Male airport. Our representative meets you at international arrivals, helps with luggage, and guides you to the domestic terminal and check-in counter. This is included in all dive packages — no extra cost.

Entry Requirements

Visa & Entry

30-day free tourist visa on arrival for most nationalities
Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond entry date
Confirmed return or onward ticket
Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or dive package confirmation)

Dive Insurance

DAN (Divers Alert Network) dive insurance is strongly recommended. It covers hyperbaric treatment, medical evacuation, and diving-specific medical expenses. The nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Addu atoll.

Luggage Guide

Packing Smart

25kg checked baggage on domestic flights. Every kilogram counts when you're packing dive gear. Here's what to bring and what to rent.

Bring With You

  • Your own mask — fit matters, don't leave this to rental
  • Dive computer — your safety tool, always bring your own
  • Certification card (physical or digital)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Light, quick-dry clothing
  • Underwater camera + housing if you shoot
  • Power adapter (UK-style Type G plugs in Maldives)
  • Seasickness medication if sensitive

Rent at LSD

  • BCD and regulator — full rental sets available
  • 3mm wetsuit — sufficient year-round at 27-30°C
  • Fins — saves significant luggage weight
  • Dive torch — available for night/dawn dives
  • SMB (surface marker buoy) — provided for drift dives
  • Underwater camera rental (GoPro or housing setups)

Pro tip: A full set of dive gear (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins) weighs 15-20kg. If you're tight on luggage, rent the heavy items (BCD, regulator, wetsuit) and bring only your mask, computer, and camera. Excess baggage on the domestic flight is $5 per kilogram.

Travel FAQ

Common Questions

Is there a direct international flight to Fuvahmulah?

+
No. All international flights arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE) in Male. From there, you take a domestic flight to Fuvahmulah (FVM). There is no direct international service to Fuvahmulah's domestic airport.

How much does the flight from Male to Fuvahmulah cost?

+
Domestic flight prices vary by season and booking timing. Expect $150-250 USD one-way on Maldivian Airlines. Booking earlier typically secures better rates. LSD dive packages can include flights — check our packages page for all-inclusive pricing.

Can I take a ferry from Male to Fuvahmulah?

+
No. There is no ferry service between Male and Fuvahmulah — the distance (352km) is too far for ferry routes. The only ferry option is from Addu/Gan (Feydhoo Port), which is useful if you're already in the southern atolls. The Male-to-Fuvahmulah route requires a domestic flight.

What if my international flight arrives late at night?

+
Late-night domestic flights operate from Male to Fuvahmulah (departing ~23:15). If your international arrival is too late to connect, overnight accommodation near Male airport is available. LSD can help arrange transit hotels for package guests. Allow at least 2-3 hours between international arrival and domestic departure.

Is there WiFi and mobile coverage on Fuvahmulah?

+
Yes. Most hotels have WiFi (speeds are slower than urban areas). Dhiraagu and Ooredoo mobile networks cover the island — you can buy a local SIM at Male airport or on Fuvahmulah. Good enough for messaging and social media, variable for video calls.

What currency should I bring?

+
US dollars are widely accepted for dive packages, accommodation, and restaurants. Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the local currency and useful for small purchases. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels. Bring some cash for local restaurants and small shops.

Can I bring my dive gear on the domestic flight?

+
Yes. The baggage allowance is 25kg checked + 5kg carry-on. A full set of dive gear (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins) typically weighs 15-20kg. Excess baggage is charged at $5 per kilogram. You can also rent full gear at LSD to save luggage weight.

Is Fuvahmulah safe for solo travellers?

+
Very safe. Fuvahmulah is a small, close-knit community of approximately 12,000 people. Solo divers are common and dive centres pair solo guests with compatible groups. Walking around the island alone is safe at any time of day.
