Short answer: an Open Water certification is technically enough for the tiger shark dive — Tiger Harbour sits at just 6–8 meters. For every other dive site on the island, we recommend Advanced Open Water (AOWD), because Fuvahmulah's walls, channels and dawn dives live in the 18–30 meter range, often with current.

Why the tiger dive is the easy one (yes, really)

It surprises everyone: the most famous shark dive in the world is also one of the technically easiest dives on the island. A shallow sandy plateau, minimal depth, structured protocol, guides holding the frame. If you're a certified diver with basic control, the tiger dive is within your reach — the challenge is in your head, not your logbook.

Fuvahmulah's real technical character lives everywhere else: an oceanic island with no lagoon, walls dropping into serious blue, and currents that have opinions. That's where AOWD stops being paperwork and starts being freedom.

What AOWD actually unlocks here

With Open Water only, you'd be limited to 18 meters — which locks you out of the thresher cleaning stations on deeper days, the hammerhead dawn dives, and most of our 20 dive sites at their best depth.

With AOWD (30m), the island opens up: dawn threshers, the deep wall corners, the channel crossings, the full rotation. If you're coming all this way, you want the whole island, not the shallow half.

Don't have your Deep Specialty yet? This is the one to hear: we can conduct it for you right here — just 2 dives plus a short academic session — folded naturally into your dive days. You're diving anyway; two of those dives become training dives with an instructor, and you fly home with more depth, more confidence, and a new certification. It's the single most useful upgrade for this island.

Currents: the skill nobody puts on the card

Fuvahmulah will make you a better diver — the wall drops fast, you enter blue water with nothing under your fins, and the current has a personality. None of this is scary with the right team next to you; all of it is why we watch, correct early, and explain why.

If you know your buoyancy is rusty, say so — honestly, before the trip. A Scuba Skills Update ($100) on arrival day, or the Perfect Buoyancy or Waves, Tides & Currents specialty during your stay, transforms your whole week. Divers who train here go home calmer everywhere else.

How many logged dives do I need for Fuvahmulah? There's no magic number — honesty matters more. Twenty comfortable dives beats a hundred panicked ones. Tell us your real experience and we'll place you on the right sites in the right order.

Can I do the tiger dive as an Open Water diver with few dives? Usually yes — it's shallow and highly structured. We'll assess you in the water first, and our guides adjust support to your level. That 1:3 ratio exists exactly for this.

Can I complete AOWD during my trip? Yes, and it's the most popular course we run: 5 adventure dives (Deep and Navigation included) folded into your normal dive days — you're exploring the island either way.

Is nitrox worth it here? On a 3-dives-a-day schedule with deeper morning dives — yes, many divers love it. The course is $250 and takes an evening of academics.
